The residential market offers very unique challenges for architects, designers, engineers and other design professionals who select to enter this arena. Whether it is a single-family home, a multi-family residential project, high-rise residential towers or a mixed-use development, these projects can have profound affects not only on their future occupants but equally important on their surrounding communities.

The challenges that must be addressed and overcome begin early in the life of a project and understanding these issues is vital to the success of a project. Most recently, with the tremendous rise in residential construction, the most common problems to overcome have usually been related to preserving the character and natural settings of the surrounding communities.

This requires a working knowledge and experience with key issues related to site planning, grading, scale and massing, lighting, drainage, preservation of natural features, resource conservation, landscaping, building forms and numerous other universal design principles.

As projects progress through the various design phases and these global issues begin to be defined and resolved the emphasis begins to shift to more detailed and specific building systems. The work performed during the planning phases now begins to converge with the selection and coordination of the structural, mechanical, electrical plumbing and fire protection systems.
